It is a fresh and open source JavaScript framework -developed by appMobi- that focuses on providing a great experience on both of the dominant mobile operating systems with a tiny footprint and code efficiency.

Compared to jQuery Mobile (24kb), it is much smaller in size with only 3.5kb (both minified and gzipped) and covers most features with the same syntax.

When it comes to speed, jQ.Mobi is impressive there as well and mentioned to be 3x faster on Android and 2.2x faster on iOS.

The framework also has a UI library (again smaller in size) and includes plugins for mobile interactions and interfaces

With an announcement yesterday, the project officially reached to its first stable release.

jQuery Mobile already supports a huge set of mobile browsers, has theThemeRoller for mobile and it is very well-documented with guides + examples for an easy start.

 

The framework includes many widgets for (touch-optimized) mobile layouts: toolbars, buttons, pages/dialogs, content formatting, list views and forms. All built on jQuery core for a familiar and consistent syntax.

It performs all standard functions of an editor and has all the extras like undo-redo, advanced table management, creating a custom HTML element with a custom style + inserting it quickly and more.

The interface is controlled via a single CSS file and can be customized pretty easily.

It has a built-in “save” button which can be attached to a JS function that saves the content that is pretty useful for helping users not to lose their content.

elRTE can be integrated with any file manager, however, there is elFinder, a file manager that has ready-to-use integration (can be used standalone too).

The library offers a high-level of usability with features like:

  • tooltip labels displaying info on hovered items
  • zooming on a specific part of the chart
  • text rotation on labels for a better readability

Highcharts has an admirable effort in browser compatibility. For standard browsers it uses the canvas element and in some cases SVG for the graphics rendering. In Internet Explorer, graphics are drawn using VML. Besides all major browsers, it works in iPhone & IE6.

The library is offered for free to be used in personal/non-commercial projects & requires a license for commercial ones.

The toolkit is fast. It uses progressive rendering, can render 30k+ lists & tables very quickly (which would normally take minutes in IE).

It doesn’t offer a complete JavaScript framework. Rather, Uki is totally focused on the layout and, if wanted, can be used with any JS framework.

Uki comes with a rich view-component library ranging from slider to list and splitpane (more is on the way like tree, grid views).

The toolkit works cross-browser & presents a demo for creating the Google Wave interface with 100 lines of code.

OS X style searchbox

The OS X search box is an integral part of the OS X UI, and can be seen in a wide range of Macintosh software. It has an magnifying glass icon on the left of the input field, which serves as a pulldown for options/recent search terms. There is an optional placeholder (”Google” in the Safari Google search box). If there is user input in the textfield, a ‘clear’ button appears to the right of the text.
